Celebrations took place around the world on 30th September 2011 to mark FSC Friday. From a seminar in Estonia to a conference in Guatemala, workshops in Peru to an “FSC Village” in France, the day was marked in a wide variety of ways. The sun shone for the events in the UK and we have received some very positive feedback from those that took part. Many businesses offered discounts on their FSC products and many more displayed posters and promoted the day online. Employees of several companies, as well as numerous school children, wore green for the day, and staff awareness raising activities and FSC displays were organised, as well as FSC quizzes and woodland walks.Tree themed cakes and biscuits were a common theme in the 2011 celebrations of FSC Friday. From the FSC log created by 4DM to the FSC Mix cake enjoyed by staff at the Soil Association.
4DM used FSC Friday to promote Chain of Custody awareness across the company in a fun, but informative way. Fact sheets, leaflets and notice boards showing the path of their printed product from ‘sustainable forest to letterbox’ , accompanied wear something green and a cake & coffee morning, together with a staff grow a runner bean competition . A tree will be planted, dedicated to the competition winner.
FSC UK Award presented to Bristol Zoo Gardens
On FSC Friday 2011 FSC UK travelled to Bristol Zoo Gardens to present an FSC an award for outstanding contribution to the work of FSC in the UK.
Bristol Zoo’s education officers routinely introduce the FSC symbol and recommend buying FSC certified wood and paper products during these sessions. In addition the Zoo’s Wow! Gorillas outreach officer, Natasha Iannaccone, has also discussed the FSC logo and encouraged teachers and pupils to buy FSC products during assemblies and workshops that the Zoo has run for 93 schools and over 15,500 children and young people this summer.
A record number of schools celebrated FSC Friday, with school assemblies, woodland walks and FSC featuring in a range of lessons.
Northcott School (left) was one of 21 schools that joined SCA Timber Supply and its local timber & builders merchant customers for a celebration of FSC Friday and International Year of Forests. Through the SCA project, young people from the ages of five to 16 were given a presentation about sustainable wood and its journey from tree nursery to builders’ merchant, and into their homes and schools. As well as learning about FSC, the pupils also planted spruce saplings, provided by SCA.
Other school events took place around the country. 130 pupils from St Mary’s School in Stewartstown (below) had wonderful weather for their forest ramble, where they had to find numerous items and spot the various symbols hidden throughout the forest.

As well as sponsoring the FSC T-shirts again this year, Hallmark plc also promoted FSC amongst their employees for FSC Friday. As part of their celebrations they produced a giant ‘art attack’ style FSC tick-tree on the lawn at the front of their building. The logo was created from FSC certified wood-chip and was constructed by their grounds maintenance provider Greenspace Solutions.
