Most Innovative FSC Friday Celebrations

Award presented by Charles Thwaites MBE to Mick Quinn of Raft Furniture (© FSC UK)© FSC UKThis year’s award for the most innovative award in the UK was presented to Raft Furniture for their installation on Tottenham Court Road illustrating the story behind their FSC recycled teak.

Presenting the award, Charles Thwaites, Executive Director of FSC, commented:
Each year we see more businesses using FSC Friday to promote their use of responsibly sourced timber and to celebrate the world’s forests. 2012 was no exception, with retailers, manufacturers, forest owners, schools and community groups taking part across the UK and around the globe.

When it comes to raising public awareness of the FSC logo, launching an FSC-themed installation on a busy street in central London has to be one of the most effective means of communicating directly with the consumer. What made Raft’s contribution particularly outstanding was to draw the public’s attention to another, less well-known, aspect of FSC: that of the FSC Recycled label, and the truly sustainable role reclaimed timber can play in the furniture industry. The illustration of the story behind their timber will surely have made those walking along Tottenham Court Road think about the source of these and other wood-based products. We hope that their installation and associated promotional activities will encourage others to consider how they too can increase awareness of FSC.

Be Modern's visit to Houghton Community Nursery School in Houghton Le Spring. (© FSC UK)© FSC UKBe Modern has been awarded the Best FSC Friday 2012 Photograph for this image of their visit to Houghton Community Nursery School in Houghton Le Spring. The Be Modern team, alongside children from the nursery, participated in a tree planting event that took place to represent the work of FSC. Click here for details of the event.

Charles Thwaites, FSC UK Executive Director commented: This photograph, encompassing both the display of FSC promotional material and the interest in the children’s faces, epitomises the aim of FSC Friday to increase awareness of the need to protect the world’s forests for future generations. It is wonderful to see an FSC certified company going the extra mile to not only promote their own use of FSC certified material but also to engage with their local community and raise awareness of FSC. We congratulate Be Modern for embracing FSC Friday in this way

Roy Whitnall, Director of Trade Sales at Be Modern added: Be Modern is delighted to have been presented with the award for best photograph of an FSC Friday event in 2012. We are proud to have taken part in the celebration of responsible forestry and an enjoyable day was had by all. We would like to thank Head Teacher Jane Bulmer and the children of Houghton Community Nursery School for participating in our tree planting event and are looking forward to being a part of FSC Friday next year!

Refreshments included an impressively decorated cake showing the journey of paper from the forest source. Cakes were also a theme of the ABRSM event which involved turning the manager’s office into a rainforest, complete with sound effects!

FSC UK would like to thank all the schools, forest managers, manufacturers, retailers and other organisations and individuals who have supported FSC Friday in any way.  Without this support, FSC Friday 2012 would not have been the biggest national - and now global - event to date.

Easibind International Ltd and Tullis Russell Papermakers for sponsorship of FSC Friday printed material. Hallmark for sponsorship of FSC T-shirts and bags. Heritage Envelopes for supplying the FSC Friday envelopes. Stabilo, Everything Environmental, Lion Picture Framing, Go Ape, Longleat Safari Park, Quay Imports, RSPB, Early Learning Centre and Forestry Commission for the donation of competition prizes. Cuprinol for their sponsorship of the 2012 FSC Photographic Competition.

We would also like to thank the judges of our photographic competition - Steve Leonard, Ray Hawes, Edward Parker and Kathryn Ledson - and the art competition - Anne Fine and Angela Palmer - for their time and expertise.
