PAWS workshop in Cumbria

Following the success of our event in Shropshire last year, FSC UK is again teaming up with the Woodland Trust to sponsor a workshop on the management of plantations on ancient woodland sites (PAWS).

Organised by Cumbria Woodlands, the workshop 'Certification and PAWS: best practice and practical reality' will be held at Thirlmere, near Keswick, on Tuesday 27 June, with an indoor session in Thirlmere Village Hall in the morning and an outdoor session in the afternoon.

“As with the event last July, we want to give an overview of certification requirements relating to PAWS management, but then really concentrate on providing access to experts and facilitating the exchange of experience between forest managers,” says FSC UK Forest Standards Manager Dr Owen Davies. “Our hope is that this will be useful both for those who already hold FSC forest management certification but have encountered difficulties in this area, and for those who are considering certification but are not sure what will be expected of them.”

Speakers from the Woodland Trust will explain the importance of PAWS and how they manage PAWS restoration on their own sites. Vicky Bowman of United Utilities will describe how a private company approaches the certification requirements, while Angela Douglas will explain what current and prospective FSC certificate holders should and should not expect from auditors and how they can make the most of the audit experience.

Neville Elstone, Director of Cumbria Woodlands, says “I’m really pleased to welcome a range of national experts on both PAWS and certification to Cumbria. The day looks set to be vital for those involved in the management of PAWS woodlands, especially those seeking or holding certification.”

This event is fully funded by FSC UK and the Woodland Trust and there will be no cost for attendees. Attendees will be asked to arrive at 09.30 for a 10.00 start, and the afternoon outdoor session is expected to end by 15.30. Lunch will be provided.
