FSC Friday 2015

Awareness raising, Dressing green, Cakes & More!

FSC Friday 2015 NewsUK organisations celebrate FSC Friday 2015

The day was a great success with UK organisations holding interesting events, competitions and more. Importantly, FSC Friday was another important step in increasing awareness of the importance of responsible forest management and our world forests in general. It focused on the environmental, social and economic importance of forests, providing a valuable opportunity to unite and celebrate the vital role they play in our lives.

Organisations across the UK participated by holding events and celebrations, ranging from dressing green for the day and baking cakes to holding awareness raising presentations and talks.

Organisations respond with photos and summaries

The Soil Association Ltd had two stands in 'The Bear Pit' in Bristol, a spokesperson commenting:

“The Forestry team at Soil Association Certification thoroughly enjoyed our open day held for FSC Friday! We organised two stands in the Bearpit in Bristol together with One Tree per Child, the tree planting project of Bristol 2015 European Green Capital, which is planting 36,000 trees – one for each primary school child in Bristol. There was a big display of all the different types of products you can buy FSC certified as well as activities for kids, competitions and giveaways. A fun day in the sun!”

Roughly every day, 1 million tons of paper, is consumed globally which is equivalent to around 500 Boeing 747 aircrafts ¹. Further to this, 350 million people, including 60 million indigenous people, depend on forests for their daily subsistence and long term survival ². Figures like this highlight the sheer importance of our world forests and also the positive impact FSC Friday can have on increasing consumer awareness and ultimately influencing buying decisions.

RAFT Furniture, an FSC certified company based in London, took part by creating a window display and living moss wall:

“For FSC Friday, we installed our FSC reclamation story into the Raft Tottenham Court Road branch alongside a living moss wall. In addition to this, we had an evening event with drinks and snacks in order to celebrate the importance of this day. This was a huge success and the response meant that we were able to effectively spread the word about the Forest Stewardship Council and their independent certification of our methods of production and the route to retail. It was both an enjoyable evening, and a great way of spreading the word about such a good cause!”

White Rose Primary School / Ysgol Rhosyn Gwyn completed pledges and raised money for FSC:

“White Rose Primary School had a great day wearing green and completing pledges plus lots of tree based activities. We also raised £109.00 for FSC UK.”

Other organisations that participated include:

Impress Print Services Ltd, Downpatrick Nursery School, Doorset Technology Ltd, Unberleigh Academy, Blaengwawr Primary School, Builth Wells High School, Snows TImber Ltd, BAM Construct UK Ltd, Board24, White Rose Primary, Simons Group Ltd, Hathaway Academy and McCue Crafted Fit.

FSC Friday 2015 was the 8th FSC Friday in history, building on the success of previous years and further extending its reach. This year over 45 businesses, schools and groups registered for the event, most of which took advantage of our FSC Friday promotional materials available to order on our website.

Organisations could request A3 & A4 posters, bookmarks, fact sheets, pencils, pledges and prizes. Some schools like Blaengwawr Primary School (among 12 others) held competitions in support of the event, with prizes presented to winners provided by FSC UK including wristbands, FSC Bags, Trailfinders, FSC certified art canvases, games, birdboxes and more. Holding competitions is a fun and engaging way to promote the message of FSC Friday whist stimulating active involvement and deeper interest in children and young people.
