Greeting cards allow us to show the people closest to us that we care. Through choosing FSC-certified cards we can also support the forests from which they’re sourced.
Passion for the environment and wild places is at the heart of Glebe Cottage. It drives the choices of materials used, from vegetable-based inks to 100% recycled envelopes, and inspired them to obtain FSC certification.
Glebe Cottage became the first UK direct-to-retail publisher to hold FSC chain of custody in November 2006. Since then, all their products, including greeting cards, calendars and stationery, have been FSC certified. Director Susanna Morrish says “when we first took this step we said we wanted to enable consumers to make positive choices in favour of the environment, based on credible environmental claims. Obtaining FSC certification was a big step forward for us - and we haven’t looked back since!”
Not only is certification a positive move for our forests and all who depend on them, but it also allowed the company to be both competitive and to broaden its options for board. Becoming certified permitted the company to manage the FSC chain of custody themselves and to take responsibility for their paper procurement. All their greeting cards are FSC recycled due to working closely with their paper suppliers to commission 100% recycled boards.
Glebe Cottage were making environmentally conscious choices as far back as the 90s when they switched to 100% recycled envelopes, at a time when nature wasn’t on many businesses radar. In 2006 they switched to compostable packaging, and in 2008 became the UK’s first CarbonNeutral® greetings card company.
