Smurfit Kappa Celebrated FSC Friday at 35 sites across the UK
Smurfit Kappa took part in FSC Friday for the second year running and hosted a number of awareness-raising activities.
“FSC Friday 2013 was a huge success with a number of sites taking part to promote the importance of responsible forestry and we would like to say Thank you for all your hard work and effort on the day.” Adam Lenton UK Marketing Manager, Smurfit Kappa.
These are just some of the unique and interesting activities that Smurfit Kappa employees took part in across the UK:
Smurfit Kappa West Auckland celebrated the day by volunteering four of their employees to help out at Hamsterly Forest. Their day of duties consisted of trimming back bike trails, removing logs which were blocking ditches and re-laying trails.
Smurfit Kappa Diss invited pupils from the local school to come and visit the site and make their own bird boxes. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day, which also included a celebratory FSC themed lunch and a nature walk.
Smurfit Kappa Abercarn decided to improve their factory grounds by planting an orchard of apple, pear and cherry trees for employees to enjoy in the near future. They manufactured three large compost bins from FSC Timber, which take grass cuttings and other biodegradable products to turn into compost. Smurfit Kappa Abercarn also donated two FSC timber garden benches to the local retirement home.
Smurfit Kappa March raised £39.00 for WWF from cake sales and the Mayor of March was invited to plant a tree on site to commemorate the day.
Smurfit Kappa Northampton went the extra mile with three of the employees and the headteacher of the local school abseiling down Northampton’s Express Lift Tower on October 12th, raising money for a planned nature reserve.
Smurfit Kappa Tannochside welcomed a group of six primary school children to their site, which included planting a tree in the grounds.
Smurfit Kappa Chelmsford donated £200 towards the Essex Wildlife Trust’s tree planting programme and provided bird feeders for the Trust’s education officers so they could help out local schools.
Smurfit Kappa Barnstable supplied bird feeders in support of the day.
FSC Friday 2014 will take place on Friday 26 September.
