Recognising the impact that Covid-19 is having on the work of Forest Management certificate holders all over the world, FSC has extended the transition period for phasing in the revised Pesticides Policy to the end of 2020.

The revised Policy introduced a system of environmental and social risk assessment to regulate the use of chemical pesticides, and in particular what FSC considers to be Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) based on a set of objective criteria. For some HHPs, the risk assessment requirements have already come into force. For other HHPs, including the herbicide glyphosate and the insecticide acetamiprid used in UK forestry, and for non-HHP chemicals, the risk assessments were to come into force on 1 August 2020. To allow more time for certificate holders to adapt their management practices in the midst of the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the transition period has now been extended to 31 December 2020.

FSC has also taken the opportunity to further clarify how draft HHP International Generic Indicators should be taken into account in environmental and social risk assessments.

The transition arrangements are set out in full in interpretation INT-POL-30-001_07,as updated on 25 June 2020. For further information on the FSC Pesticides Policy and its application in the UK, visit our dedicated page on the FSC UK website.
