FSC Board confirms decision on requirements for latest active ingredients added to ‘Highly Hazardous’ Pesticides list
In November 2015, the FSC International Board of Directors decided to suspend the need for derogations (temporary approvals) for the use of new active ingredients added to the FSC List of ‘Highly Hazardous’ Pesticides (FSC-STD-30-001a EN) in its February 2015 update.
At its 73rd meeting in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo in November 2016, the FSC International Board of Directors reconfirmed this decision on the basis of a recommendation from the FSC pesticides policy working group (PPWG).
In line with this decision, the Forest Programme has updated FSC-STD-30-001a to identify the active ingredients that currently do not require a valid derogation for their use. For the use of all other listed active ingredients a derogation according to FSC-PRO-30-001 V1-0 is still required.
The PPWG will meet in April in Brazil to continue the discussions with a view to developing the first draft of the revised FSC Pesticides Policy. The PPWG’s objective is to identify the best feasible approach to reduce the use of chemical pesticides in FSC-certified forests and plantations, and to prevent, minimise, and mitigate the related environmental and social impacts. The revised policy shall integrate hazard and risk-based approach, and be cost-effective and outcome oriented.
