We asked 12-18 year olds to raise awareness by writing a letter or article to their local newspaper, persuading readers to look for the FSC logo when out shopping.
After reading through all of the letters entered into the competition, the staff here at FSC UK had to decide which ones stood out from the rest and deserved the winning prizes. The calibre of the entries was very high and it was a tough decision!
We eventually chose Joshua Ingran, Shiona Finlinson, Hannah Morling and Phoebe Clarke for their inspiring letters.
Here is one of the winning letters written by Joshua Ingran...
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is saving forests and all the animals, plants and people with it. I hope this shows people like you why forests are so important and what you can do to help.
First of all I would like to say what the FSC is all about. It looks after areas of forests which includes all the people, plants that live in them plus (if there is one in the forest) the sacred area.
The sad fact is that just rainforests on their own contain 50 million species of people, animals, herbs, fruit and plants (so in other words 50% of all living things) and the rainforest also covers 2% of the worlds surface. Nearly all of these forests are being cut down. Are you supporting companies that destroy these places? Forests can be the most beautiful and breathtaking places on earth. If we don‛t do something soon then they could be gone!
You can help save the forests by buying FSC products and then you know you are supporting a company that grows trees in the forests they use. You can buy charcoal, tissues, wood furniture, books, card, floors and footballs. For more details about where to get FSC products go to www.fsc-uk.org.
I‛ve done my bit will you do yours?
